An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 42 1/4" [72 x 107 cm]) (Learn More)

Seal Bros. Circus, the 1950 circus poster featuring an image of Elmo Lincoln ("The Original Tarzan in Person!"). The Seal Bros. Circus was a well known circus that operated from the 1930s (or earlier) through the 1950s (or later). In 1950, they hired Elmo Lincoln, who had retired from movies in 1927 (after getting great fame for playing Tarzan in the first two Tarzan movies, and for starring in many sequels). He had left the movies to own a mine in Mexico, but that didn't pan out well, and in the late 1940s, he returned to Hollywood and appeared in a few uncredited roles, and was hired by the Seal Bros. Circus, but we don't know how long he appeared for. He died in 1953 of a heart attack. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had paper loss in the middle of the right, extending into the edge of the "N" of "TARZAN", with several tears around the edges of the paper loss. Otherwise, it had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and surface paper loss on parts of some foldlines. At some point, someone backed the poster onto a thin linen with no excess. Whatever glue they used on the tears at the edge of the torn area did not hold and those areas are all now "lifting" from the linen. A restorer could certainly re-glue those areas, or they could simply remove the poster from the old thin linen and properly re-back it. But please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored!
