Date Sold 12/29/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Black Legion, the 1936 Archie Mayo Ku Klux Klan-like lawyer legal crime thriller (Warner Bros. would not attack the Klan directly by having the group in the movie be actual Ku Klux Klan members, but everybody watching the movie knew what was intended; what is most interesting about the movie is that Bogart plays a pretty nice factory worker who loses his job to an immigrant, and he is convinced to join the Klan, and afterwards, he essentially turns into a really monstrous guy!) starring Humphrey Bogart, Dick Foran, Erin O'Brien-Moore, Ann Sheridan, Robert Barrat, Joe Sawyer (billed as "Joseph Sawyer"), Addison Richards, Eddie Acuff, Paul Harvey, Dickie Jones, and Helen Flint. Note that the Breen office had many problems with the script for this movie (written by Robert Lord, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), specifically because of the racial and religious prejudice addressed in the movie. It seems that Warner Bros. was unsure of how to best promote this movie. The few original posters we have seen have a very small image of Humphrey Bogart, and he is not billed on the lobby cards! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this first release title card. All first release posters and lobby cards are very rare on this movie, perhaps because it received a quick 1940s re-release, or perhaps because of the subject matter. We recently auctioned a first release insert, which we had never auctioned before, and it sold for $2,700! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. The card had a long diagonal crease in the upper right, going through the klansman's shoulder, and through the "N" of "LEGION". It had staple holes in that area. It had some diagonal creases in the upper right and a few creases and scuffs around the edges. It had scuffs in the letters of the word "LEGION" and a few tiny ones in the bottom of the word "BLACK", and some scattered in some of the letters of Bogart's credit, with a tear and small paper loss in the upper left of the "B" of "BOGART". It also had pinholes in the corners and a tear in the center of the bottom border. Because the card has a glossy finish to it, the scuffs described above are in the surface emulsion, like a photo, so they are much more noticeable when the card is tilted to the light. Someone put tape on the back of the card's defects, and then performed restoration to the front of those areas. When the card is looked at straight on, most of the defects are not very noticeable, but they are very evident when the card is tilted to the light, so bear all this in mind (and look at our images of the front and back of the card) before bidding on this incredibly rare lobby card.
