Date Sold 8/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 3 8x10 stills from Whoopee! We divided the Whoopee sets into three groups, because of the different types, and because they are extremely "collectible", and in the case of this group of three, the still showing the girls outside the building has a photographer stamp on the back for Kenneth Alexander. Of course, Whoopee is the 1930 Thornton Freeland romantic love triangle musical comedy ("From the musical comedy by William Anthony McGuire"; "Music by Walter Donaldson"; "Lyrics by Gus Kahn"; "All Technicolor"; produced by Florenz Ziegfeld and Samuel Goldwyn; about a girl who is engaged to a cowboy sheriff, but she secretly loves a half-breed Indian; she runs off with a hapless man, who thinks he is just giving her a ride, but she left her fiance a note that she eloped with the hapless man, and a wacky chase ensues!) starring Eddie Cantor, Ethel Shutta (a Broadway stage actress who appeared in this one movie, and then not again for 28 years!), Paul Gregory, Eleanor Hunt, Jack Rutherford, Dorothy Knapp, and Jane Keithley. Note that this lot and 21 others we are currently auctioning, were owned by director H. Bruce Humberstone (nicknamed "Lucky"). He was born in 1901 and he started as a juvenile actor, and in his teens, he became a script clerk, and then worked his way up to being an assistant director to many top directors, including King Vidor. In 1932, he directed his first movie, and he worked steadily through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, directing one last movie in 1961. He directed both "A" and "B" movies, including some Tarzan, Charlie Chan, Cisco Kid, and more, and some of his movies have cult status, including "I Wake Up Screaming"! The 22 lots we are currently auctioning include a large number of stills (many of them key books and some include lots of incredible candids showing Humberstone) from movies that he either directed or was the assistant director on, and there are also some non-still items as well, including his personal phone/address book, which had the phone numbers of all the top stars of that time! This is a rare opportunity to obtain large numbers of guaranteed original stills and other items from Humberstone movies that were the property of the man himself! Condition: very good.
