Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy in 'On the waterfront'... one of the few... the very few... truly great motion pictures!"; "Screenplay by Budd Schulberg"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; since both Schulberg and Kazan "named names" and co-operated with the House Un-American Activities Committee, some consider this movie a defense of informers; I consider it one of the finest movies ever made!) starring Marlon Brando (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Karl Malden (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Lee J. Cobb (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Rod Steiger (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Pat Henning, Eva Marie Saint (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; billed as "Introducing Eva Marie Saint"), John F. Hamilton (as 'Pop' Doyle), and Thomas Handley (as Tommy Collins, the boy who helps with the pigeons; in the movie, he kills the pigeons after Brando's character testifies, which was especially ironic, because young Handley's father was a longshoreman who was killed for opposing union corruption, and he was hired to feed the pigeons on the set, but then Kazan gave him a screen test and he won the role of Tommy; even more interesting, he never made another movie, but he grew up to be a longshoreman himself, and in 2002 was elected recording secretary of his union after the leadership was ousted for corruption!). Note that this one of only three movies (the other two being The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II!) that have ever had 3 different actors nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar! This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Also note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thinner paper backing, it COULD be sent rolled, but we would MUCH prefer to send it in a large flat package (because we fear that rolling it, even into a wide tube, would have an excellent change of damaging it, so we will only send it in a tube if the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage), but otherwise, we will ship it in a very large flat package, so bear that expense in mind before bidding on this poster. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had many tears and areas of paper loss in the left half of the horizontal fold and some, but a lesser amount, on the other folds. It had diagonal creases in the corners of the image and marker writing on the back of the top left, bleeding through to the front in Brando's hair. It had some small tears and tiny paper loss around the edges and some smudges and stains in the background areas. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Also, there is small surface paper loss in the top border where someone attached a piece of tape and much smaller surface paper loss in the center of the bottom border.
