An Original Vintage German Film Program (measures 8 3/4" x 11 1/2" [22 x 29 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More)

M (released in England in 1932 and in the U.S. in 1933), the classic 1931 Fritz Lang German psychotic-serial-child-murderer serial killer crime film noir thriller (about a killer of children who is hunted by the police AND by "regular" criminals, who want him stopped because he is bad for their business, and when they catch him ahead of the police, they put him "on trial"; surely one of the handful of greatest movies ever made!) starring Peter Lorre (as Hans Beckert), Gustaf Grundgens, Otto Wernicke (as Inspector Karl Lohmann), Theo Lingen, Ellen Widmann, Inge Landgut, and Theodor Loos (as Inspector Groeber)

Important Added Info: Note that, until we were consigned this program, we thought that there were two printings of this program. We knew that there was one that has the film program name and the date at upper left, with a red "M" on the cover is from the VERY FIRST printing in May of 1931 (it is a "country of origin" item for this German movie). The movie proved so popular that they ran out of programs and they had to print more. UNTIL THE DISCOVERY OF THIS PROGRAM, WE HAD THOUGHT THAT FOR THE NEXT PRINTING, THE DATE WAS TAKEN OFF THE COVER AND THE RED COLORING ON THE "M" WAS REMOVED (we have seen both an all-black and all-sepia version of what we thought was the second printing). BUT NOW, THIS PROGRAM PROVES THAT THERE WAS YET ANOTHER PRINTING THAT SURELY CAME BEFORE THE SINGLE COLOR ONES! But we don't have a complete answer on this additional printing. It has the "M" in red on the cover, and is identical to the ones with the date, but it does not have a date. So how to explain it? It was consigned to us along with two 3-page supplements about the movie. One is entirely in German and the other is entirely in English. That might provide an answer as to what this program is. One expert we talked to said he thinks this was sort of an "export" program that was sent to other countries along with the supplements to try to get them to book the movie (and that would explain why they left the date off the cover, since it obviously didn't apply). Another expert thinks it may be that this program was prepared AFTER they ran out of the dated ones, but BEFORE they printed the single color ones. Both of these explanations are completely reasonable, and either way, this is the ONLY example of this version that has surfaced, and it surely predates the one-color versions! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: very good. There are two faint slightly diagonal vertical partial creases down the left side of the cover. There are also some faint scuffs and creases in the solid black areas, but none of these are very distracting. There is 1 1/2" of separation at the top of the spine on the cover. There is a light paper clip stain at the top of the first interior page. There are some creases and scuffs in the black background areas on the back cover and fine surface paper loss on the edge of the spine. The two staples are present, but the portion of them that shows at the center of the program is slightly rusted. Other than the above basically minor defects, the program is in surprisingly nice condition, especially considering its age! One of the two 3-page supplements is stapled and one has a paper clip, and they have some slight wear.
