WASHINGTON GOES TO TOWN 8x10.25 still R1940s Mantan seduced by maid Marguerite Whitten! Date Sold 9/16/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-Release Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Mr. Washington Goes to Town, the 1941 William Beaudine black African American all-black-cast comedy (a parody of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which had been released two years earlier) starring F.E. Miller (Flourney E. Miller), Mantan Moreland, Marguerite Whitten, Maceo Bruce Sheffield, Sam Warren, Edward Boyd, and Arthur Ray. Note that seasoned director William Beaudine actually directed this film (because he needed the money), but didn't want credit so as to avoid being associated with a low-budget all-black-cast film, so producer Jeb Buell put his name as the director on all the movie paper! Also note that Flourney Miller was a major figure in black Broadway musical history, performing and writing with his partner Aubrey Lyles. After Lyles passed away in 1933, Miller appeared in a number of all-black movies in the 1930s and 1940s. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that Toddy Pictures acquired the rights to this 1941 Dixie National Pictures movie, and re-released it in the 1940s. Because the Toddy Pictures posters are not marked as being a re-issue in any way, they are often mistakenly sold as originals, but they are in fact from the 1940s re-release!
