An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded German Movie Poster (measures 37 1/2" x 56" [95 x 142 cm]) (Learn More)

Der Dschunfel Ruft (released in the U.S. in 1937 as "The Call of the Jungle"), the 1936 Harry Piel German wild animal adventure starring Harry Piel, Paul Henckels, Ursula Grabley, Gerda Maurus, and Philipp Manning. Note that director Harry Piel was a major figure in early cinema. He wrote and directed his first movie when he was just 20 years old in 1912, and he made several movies over the next three years, and then began acting in them as well! He made many movies over the next decades. In 1933, he joined the Nazi party and made movies for them. In 1934, he made Der Herr der Welt, a science fiction movie with robots, but he had actually used robots in a movie he made in 1915! At the end of World War II, he was sentenced to 6 months in jail and banned from the film industry for 5 years. In 1950, he started a new film company, but did not have much success, and he retired in 1953 and passed away in 1961. Unfortunately, almost all the negatives of his silent films were destroyed when Germany was bombed during World War II, so few of his films survive, and that, combined with his Nazi collaboration, has caused him to be largely forgotten, except by major film buffs.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned a poster from this movie as "pre-War" movie posters from Germany are virtually nonexistent (it seems likely that most were destroyed during the huge paper shortages that occurred during World War II). Because this poster lacks text (including credits and title) except for the studio, it may have been a printer's test (a printing created to be reviewed by studio execs for approval), or it may be an export poster that was intentionally left blank so that other countries could print the title and credits in a language other than German. Also, note also that this is a rare "country of origin" poster for this German movie!

UPDATED 04/21/2017: Note that a knowledgeable collector identified this previously unknown film, and we have updated the auction accordingly.

Condition: poor. The poster is in much lesser condition. There are several defects scattered along the edges and foldlines/crossfolds and there are several significant areas of foldline and crossfold separation (the poster is completely separated along several folds and it is currently in several pieces). The poster paper itself has become somewhat brittle with age, making the poster difficult to handle without creating further fold and edge damage. There are MANY other defects that can be clearly seen in our super-sized image. Please see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item prior to placing a bid and please do not bid unless you can accept the defects described above, or you are willing to pay to have them properly restored.
