An Original 1950s (from the first release in Japan) Vintage Theatrical Tri-Folded Japanese "B2" Movie Poster (measures 20" x 28 1/2" [51 x 72 cm]) (Learn More) Zouzou, the 1934 Marc Allegret French romantic musical (an unusual story of a black girl and a white man who are raised as brother and sister as children, but when they grow up, she is in love with him, and when he is accused of a crime, she tries to become a successful performer so she can earn money for his defense) starring Josephine Baker (in the title role as Zouzou), Jean Gabin, Pierre Larquey, Yvette Lebon, Illa Meery, and Palau. Note that Josephine Baker was a black African American stage performer, singer, and actress from the 1920s to the 1960s, who spent much time on stage, and made only a few movies. She went to Europe and achieved enormous success (and notoriety) in the Follies Bergere and other shows, because she danced nude in some of her dances. She only starred in two movies, both in the 1930s, Zou-Zou and Princess Tam-Tam, but she appeared in smaller roles in some movies in the 1920s and the 1940s and 1950s. Note that this movie was shown in France in 1934, and in other countries in the next few years after that, but it was not exhibited in the U.S., no doubt because of the interracial romance and Miss Baker's sexuality. It was finally released in the U.S. in 1989. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is clearly from before the 1960s, but whether it is from 1934 or from a later 1930s, 1940s, or 1950s release is anyone's guess. If anyone knows more about the date of this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Please do NOT bid on this poster unless you can accept the uncertainty of its date! Also note that this poster was tri-folded only (which means there is no vertical machine fold) but because it would be more expensive to send flat, it will be sent rolled in a tube. UPDATED 04/06/2011: Note that a Japanese poster expert tells that he believes this poster to surely be from after World War II (almost certainly from the 1950s). Therefore, we are listing it as a possible 1950s first release. Condition: good to very good. There are some light brown stains scattered throughout the poster from exposure to moisture. The poster is otherwise in nice condition and it seems quite likely that these stains could easily be removed through chemical means during the linenbacking process and the poster will display quite nicely!
