Date Sold 6/30/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded World War II Poster (measures 16" x 20" [41 x 51 cm]) (Learn More) Defend American Freedom, the 1942 World War II (WWII) Home Front poster ("It's everybody's job") encouraging workers to increase productivity, and featuring McClelland Barclay art of Uncle Sam taking off his top hat and replacing it with a workman's cap. Note that while he is best remembered as a wonderful "pin-up" artist, McClelland Barclay had become an artist before he was 21, and had been published in The Saturday Evening Post and other leading magazines. In 1917, he created a World War I poster called "Fill the Breach", which was awarded a prize. After that war, he became more and more in demand as an illustrator, and in 1930, he created the "Fisher Body Girl", which was used extensively by General Motors, and became an American icon (the model was his wife, who was just 19 at the time). In the 1930s, he created some iconic movie posters, including "Hotel For Women". In 1938, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and began to work on camouflage designs for airplanes, and soon after Pearl Harbor, he created several World War II recruiting posters. Sadly, he was working for the Navy on creating camouflage in 1942 when the boat he was on was torpedoed, and he was killed, and he was just 51. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: McClelland Barclay Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Condition: good. The poster was never folded. There is paper loss in the bottom right corner. There are creases in that area. There are many smudges around the edges and in parts of the white background areas (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
