Date Sold 7/13/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage 6" x 9" [15 x 23 cm] Postcard (Learn More) Rita Hayworth was born in 1918. During the early 1940s she was one of the greatest sex symbols the movies has ever had, most notably in the 1946 movie, Gilda. But she was born Margarita Cansino, and was originally a child dancer with her father. She later caught the attention of Harry Cohn at Columbia, who cast her as a sexy dancer in some late 1930s movies, first billing her as Rita Cansino, and then renaming her to Hayworth (her mother's maiden name). Cohn did all he could to get rid of her Spanish ethnicity, changing her name, having her dye her black hair red, and having her hairline raised! She made many memorable dance movies (including ones opposite both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly!), but she is probably best remembered for her five steamy melodramas opposite Glenn Ford. She had a tumultuous private life, marrying five times, most memorably to Orson Welles and Prince Aly Khan (this was before Grace Kelly married her prince!). Her most famous quote (explaining why she married so many times) was "Every man I have ever known has fallen in love with Gilda and awakened with me." She exhibited erratic behavior in her later years because she suffered from early Alzheimer's, which went undiagnosed for quite some time. Rita passed away in 1987 at the age of 68. In those later years, she was cared for by her daughter, Princess Yasmin Khan, who has also been a champion of raising money for Alzheimer's research. She is also best remembered for her roles in The Lady from Shanghai, Only Angels Have Wings, Separate Tables, Tales of Manhattan, and many others! Important Added Info: Note that this is a special promotional postcard that was created with an image of Rita Hayworth from Gilda on one side, and postcard printing on the back, and the tagline "I didn't think I'd be true to a man again as long as I lived... Gilda". Under that in smaller letters is "Note: This is one of a series of pictures of Rita Hayworth as she appears in the title role of the Columbia motion picture, 'Gilda', with Glenn Ford." Since the wording is the way it is, it would seem to be one of a series of special promotional postcards Columbia created showing scenes from Gilda, and of course, this is far and away the best scene, with Rita Hayworth full-length in the iconic black sheath dress! We have never auctioned one of these postcards before. In addition, there is a "signature" on the front of the card, but we have compared it to known examples of Miss Hayworth's signature, and it is definitely not hers, so it is likely a secretarial signature. Please do not bid on this very rare postcard thinking it has Miss Hayworth's signature, because it definitely does not. But it is certainly a really great image and extremely rare! Condition: good. The card was roughly handled and there are creases scattered across the center of the card, with some in the rest of the card, including a less noticeable diagonal crease going across Hayworth's mouth and hair. These creases do not show well even in our super-sized image, so please do not bid on this postcard thinking it is in better condition than it is. However, the creases are much more noticeable when the card is tilted to the light. When it is looked at straight on from a reasonable viewing distance, it really displays pretty well.
