An Original Vintage Linenbacked Canadian World War II Recruitment Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 36 1/4" [60 x 92 cm]) (Learn More) The Torch, the 1940s Canadian World War II (WWII) military recruitment poster ("The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields.") featuring a World War I (WWI) poem by Canadian military doctor and artillery commander Major John McCrae, and Filipowski art of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. Major John McCrae was a Canadian poet, physician, author, artist and soldier during World War I, and a surgeon during the Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium. He is best known for writing the famous war memorial poem "In Flanders Fields", which is often read at funerals, especially of those who died during war (and some of it is quoted on this poster, but surprisingly, McCrae's poster is misspelled as "McCrea"). Tragically, McCrae himself died of pneumonia in 1918, near the end of the war. Artist: R. Filipowski Important Added Info: Note that this poster was likely printed in two versions. The images are the same, but one has English, and one has French (for the French speaking portion of Canada). This auction is for the English language version (we have never auctioned the French language version). Also note that we have auctioned many U.S. World War II posters that were designed to be displayed to the general public to encourage them to help in the war effort, but now we have been consigned 10 similar very rare Canadian World War II posters, and they we are currently auctioning them in 10 separate auctions! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had a 5" tear in the right of the top border extending into the top of the monument. Otherwise, it had only minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
