An Original Vintage Deluxe 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] News Photo (Learn More) Jack Johnson vs. Jess Willard, the 1915 boxing sports match held in Havana, Cuba on April 5th. On Round 26, challenger Jess Willard knocked heavyweight champion Jack Johnson out. Jack Johnson was a black African American heavyweight boxer who by 1901, at the age of 23, was the best boxer in the world, but due to the prejudices of the time, he could not fight the leading white boxers. In 1908, he defeated the current world champion, which outraged many white fight fans, who longed for a "Great White Hope", who would re-capture the title. In 1910, James Jeffries, former undefeated champion, came out of retirement to fight Johnson, but he lost the fight in the 15th round. Finally, in 1915, Johnson fought Jess Willard, who was a huge cowboy from Kansas. Johnson, who was at the time, 37, lost the fight in the 26th round. 6 months later, Johnson confessed to throwing the fight, due to his major legal battles (which stemmed from him having a relationship with a white woman, which was against the law at that time), but there are many who say he did not throw the fight. Certainly, Jack Johnson was the most celebrated and controversial black heavyweight champion until Muhammad Ali came along to take away both those titles. It has "COPYRIGHT 1915 PRESS PHOTO SYN." printed in the bottom left, but is the photo from 1915? We can't say for certain, but it was found in with a group of photos that all dated from the 1910s and early 1920s, so if it is not from 1915, then it is almost surely from soon afterwards. Please do not bid on this photo unless you can accept the uncertainty as to whether or not it is from 1915. Condition: good to very good. There is discoloration around the edges of the photo, typical of extremely old photos like this. The lettering of the copyright has slightly faded (see our image). Otherwise, it is in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
