He was married to Joan Crawford between 1935 and 1939. He started out as a leading man, but fairly early on, he shifted to playing "the other man" (the one who never got the girl!), and later he seamlessly shifted to playing character roles. Some of his movie roles include: Mutiny On The Bounty (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Advise & Consent, Bombshell, Phantom Lady, and Five Graves to Cairo.
