A Set of 2 Original Vintage Theatrical Trade Ad (each measures 12 1/4" x 18 1/2" [31 x 47 cm]; 2 pages) (Learn More) Saul Bass was an American artist and director from the 1940s to the 1990s. Saul is famous for his artwork on many great movie posters and being an Academy Award winning director. Some of his works include: Exodus, Anatomy of a Murder, Vertigo, Bonjour Tristesse, Saint Joan, and the Man with the Golden Arm Artist: Saul Bass Important Added Info: Note that these trade ads (the "Man with the Golden Arm" is a single page, and the "Nine Hours to Rama" is a two-page spread) were removed from issues of Hollywood Reporter that came out when these movies were about to be released. Both have great artwork images by Saul Bass. One might not think of magazine pages as being rare and collectible, but it is highly likely that virtually all issues of Hollywood Reporter were thrown out soon after they were read (people did not value them any more than they did the newspapers they read and discarded each day), and finding 50 year-old copies of this magazine is incredibly hard to do, and finding a specific issue is like finding a needle in a haystack! Three years ago, we auctioned a set of three trade ads by Saul Bass from Hollywood Reporter, and they auctioned for $470!
UPDATED 12/08/2014: Note that a knowledgeable collector pointed out that the Nine Hours to Rama trade ad features one of three designs Saul Bass created for the film, and this particular design only ran once (on the anniversary of Gandhi's assassination). None of Bass' designs were used for the film's poster campaign so they are quite difficult to find. Also, the Man with the Golden Arm trade ad was produced in advance of the iconic poster campaign and is the only design where all-black boxes were used. Condition: good to very good. Both trade ads were removed from a magazine. The Man with the Golden Arm has tears in the lower right blank border and two areas of paper loss in the left blank border, and the Nine Hours to Rama has staple holes and creases down the center, where it was attached to the rest of the magazine (see our images).
