A Linenbacked Belgian Special Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 33 3/4" [60 x 86 cm]) (Learn More) Belgian Stock Anti-War Poster, the early 1930s Belgian stone litho stock anti-war poster featuring art of a skeleton looming over a burning city and biplanes (spraying mustard gas?) flying overhead. The artwork was designed so that it could be combined with another "text" poster piece which would have featured information on meetings or anti-war events. We know the poster was created in the late 1920s or early 1930s because we have seen two examples of this poster along with "text" pieces, created by the anti-war Flemish organization Verbond V.O.S., both of which mentioned a 1927 no-tax-stamp statute (posters like this were exempt from taxation) and one encouraged people to prepare for the upcoming 1932 World Disarmament Conference (also known as Geneva Disarmament Conference and Conference for the Reduction and Limitation of Armaments). A substantial international non-governmental campaign to promote disarmament developed in the 1920s and early 1930s, and there were many rallies all over the world in an effort to achieve world disarmament, and certainly, this incredibly striking poster would draw many people to such rallies! These rallies helped lead to the World Disarmament Conference which took place in Geneva, Switzerland from 1932 to 1934. Ultimately, it was a failed effort by member states of the League of Nations, together with the United States, to actualize the ideology of disarmament. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had minor fold wear. It had a few small tears around the edges, mostly only in the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
