An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 24 pages) (Learn More)

The Big Parade of Stars, the 1927 MGM campaign book ("King of them all") featuring images and information about upcoming MGM movie releases for the 1927-28 season. Note that in the two years preceding this, MGM had campaign books with tipped-in 8" x 10" sepia and black & white images of the stars. Apparently, this year, they probably decided that it was not worth doing this, and they instead printed really nice full-color artwork images of their top stars within pages that have biographies of them. They also have several pages of great artwork ads for the upcoming films, including Lon Chaney in The Hypnotist (which was the working title for London After Midnight, the famous lost film), Lillian Gish in Annie Laurie, and Greta Garbo in Love. There is a great 2-page spread on Our Gang, and the Our Gang kids are also pictured on a different page. Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars!

Important Added Info: Note that we twice before auctioned an example of this campaign book. One had a hardcover binding. The other one did not, and it was either an example of the hardcover book with the hardcovers removed (because the interior first page of the hardcover was the same as the cover of this softcover), or possibly, that other one was removed from an exhibitor magazine (it is difficult to say for certain). Now we have been consigned this book, which we believe is the softcover version of this book, and which definitely did not originally have a hardcover binding, and definitely did not come from a campaign book.

If all that isn't complicated enough, we were now also consigned a Spanish version of the MGM campaign book for 1927-28, which we are auctioning in a separate auction!

Condition: good to very good. There is tiny paper loss in the top left corner of the cover. There are some stains down the edge of the cover and some stains scattered on the back cover. The interior pages have a few smudges and stains, but are mostly in pretty nice condition (see our many images).
