It was founded by Samuel Cunard and featured the fastest trans-Atlantic steam ship of the time (which held the record for 30 years). The company remained primarily for mail carriage until after World War II (WWII) when the company reformed as a passenger fleet and today still maintains three of the largest cruise ships in the world.
