A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" [13 x 20 cm]; 354 pages) (Learn More) The Benson Murder Case, the 1930 Frank Tuttle detective mystery crime thriller ("The greatest of them all!"; based on the novel by S.S. Van Dine; in this entry in the Philo Vance detective series, the producers incorporated the stock market crash of 1929 into the plot, and the story focuses around a crooked stock broker who is murdered at a lodge, and all of the guests are suspects, because he has swindled many of them out of money, but Vance sorts things out!) starring William Powell (as Philo Vance), Natalie Moorhead, Eugene Pallette, Paul Lukas, William 'Stage' Boyd, and E.H. Calvert. Note that William Powell first played Philo Vance in 1929's "The Canary Murder Case" and after the character proved very popular, he followed it the next year with "The Greene Murder Case", after which Basil Rathbone took over the role that same year in "The Bishop Murder Case". After Powell played Vance again in "The Benson Murder Case" (which was also made in a Spanish language version with an entirely different case), he then played him one more time in "The Kennel Murder Case" in 1933, but the character also appeared in ten more movies between 1934 and 1947, with other actors in the lead roles. Burt photoplay edition from 1930 (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: A.L. Burt (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would re-publish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. The example of this book offered here does not have its dust jacket. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Condition: good to very good. There are stains on the cover, but otherwise, the book is in pretty good condition. See our multiple images to get a good sense of the condition of this book. Learn More about condition grades
