What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the bottom crossfold and tiny paper loss at the other two crossfolds. It once had paper tape on the back of several areas, and when it was removed it caused surface paper loss on the back of parts of the poster, but it did not affect the front (but it can be seen when the poster is held up to a strong light (in a way no one ever views the poster!). It had creases, scuffs, and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of several foldlines and pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges. It had a semi-circular tear and paper loss in the background to the right of the top of Bogart's ear, slightly extending into his ear, and into the bottom of his hair. It also had a 2" tear in his hair just next to the top of his forehead, extending into the corner of his forehead. There was a 10" tear in the left of the top border going through the background and extending into the edge of Bogart's hair. There were some faint smudges scattered in the solid colored areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Note that the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster. I detail all of the above defects because this is a rare and valuable poster, but I think most collectors would be happy to display it as it is, and certainly, a restorer could perform additional restoration, with or without re-backing the poster!
