eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 4j001 CHARLIE CHAN IN CITY IN DARKNESS 1sh '39 images of Sidney Toler, pretty Lynn Bari, rare! Date Sold 2/7/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in City in Darkness, the 1939 Herbert I. Leeds mystery crime thriller ("Based on a play by Gina Kaus and Ladisalus Fodor") starring Sidney Toler (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Lynn Bari, Richard Clarke, Harold Huber, Leo G. Carroll, Lon Chaney Jr., Pedro de Cordoba, Dorothy Tree, C. Henry Gordon, Douglas Dumbrille, and Noel Madison. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is the first time we have ever auctioned a one sheet poster for this movie (and we have only seen a few lobby cards and 8x10 stills!) Condition: good to very good. There is some separation in the crossfolds and tears of varying lengths along parts of the vertical foldline. There is paper loss in the two upper crossfolds and in the left blank border, and there is small paper loss at lower center (repaired with tape from the back). There are some pinholes around the edges (some are torn or enlarged due to rough removal). There are a few light scuff marks in the image of Toler's jacket at right and there is some black pen writing on back at upper center that very slightly bleeds through to the front, but it is not very noticeable or distracting. It is otherwise in pretty good condition and if one chose to have this rare poster restored it would look great, although I imagine many collectors would be happy with this poster as it is.
