An Original Vintage Linenbacked Dutch Stage Play Poster (measures 32" x 43 1/4" [81 x 110 cm]) (Learn More)

Pygmalion, the 1930s Dutch stage play production (of the classic play written by George Bernard Shaw in 1913; a modernization of the Greek myth of the sculptor who fell in love with his beautiful statue and she came to life; in this re-telling, it is an English gentleman who makes a flower girl into a lady and falls in love with her). Note that this poster features Pieter Vanderhem art of a man, woman and statue. We found once site on the Internet that had an image of this poster and said it was from "circa 1930". We found another site that said this is a Dutch movie poster for the 1938 movie starring Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard. We are pretty certain that this is not correct and that the poster is from a stage production, likely from the late 1920s or early 1930s, and that it predates the 1938 movie and is a stage play poster and not a movie poster. If anyone knows more about this production, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had tape stains, other stains, and some small tears in the blank borders, and in the bottom border extending into Shaw's credit. It had some creases and smudges scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
