Note that this poster features Emil Cardinaux art of a man on a dappled horse with a flag! This poster art was titled "Das Grune Ross" (The Green Horse) and, at the time, was much criticized by the public (it didn't feature the usual cliches that they wanted to see), parodied by other artists, and the event organizers used different art overseas because of the backlash. However, it was praised by members of avantgarde and modernist movement, and today it is considered one of the most iconic posters of Swiss poster history. Emil Cardinaux was a Swiss painter and poster artist from the 1890s to 1936. Cardinaux created many works in various media (book illustrations, cards, caricatures, landscapes, murals, stained glass and posters). Cardinaux was one the first artists to recognize the specific qualities a poster had to fulfill. Even in his earliest designs, he tried to create tightly structured pieces of art that would function as independent of their surroundings as possible. His posters stood out from the masses of ordinary ads put up on a daily basis, and their ingenious simplicity and masterly execution excite collectors up to the present day. Artist: Emil Cardinaux Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had a few tiny tears in the upper left border and some very minor wear in the rest of the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed with no excess paper around the edges, and it displays well! It appears the paperbacking was primarily done for conservation purposes and not for restoration purposes.
