A Vintage Autographed Hardcover Book (measures 5 3/4" x 8" [15 x 20 cm]; 240 pages) (Learn More) Gertrude Lawrence was a legendary stage star from the 1920s to the 1950s, who appeared in just nine movies during her illustrious career. She was great friend with Noel Coward, and worked on productions together. She was the reason the musical adaptation of "Anna and the King of Siam" occurred (as "The King and I"). She bought the rights to the non-musical movie, and she persuaded Rodgers & Hammerstein to adapt it into a musical, on the condition that she starred in it. She appeared in the play for a year and a half, being billed above the title. Unfortunately, in 1952, after the play had run for a year and a half, she was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away at the age of 54. Before she died, she had Yul Brynner's name placed above the title alongside hers, so that he would have that billing after she passed away! In 1968, a biography of her life was filmed, called "Star!", with Julie Andrews playing Lawrence. Artist: Cecil Beaton Important Added Info: Note that this item has been personally autographed (signed) by Gertrude Lawrence! Also note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Note that this item was consigned to us by an individual who owned a company that made movies and videos with famous celebrities in the 1980s and 1990s. The owner of the company would have the celebrities sign items from their famous films, and he also had correspondence with many famous celebrities which he saved. In addition, he would sometimes ask celebrities he came in contact with if they had signed items from other stars that they would sell to him, and he purchased a number of items that way. He also would purchase unsigned items from the famed Larry Edmunds Bookshop in Los Angeles or from other reputable Hollywood book stores and poster shops (to have the celebrities sign), and while he was doing that he would also purchase some of their signed items. So all of these autographed items we are auctioning were either obtained in person, obtained from celebrities who obtained them in person, or obtained from reputable Hollywood book stores, and we feel certain that the autograph(s) on this item is authentic (as is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning), and we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. Condition: good to very good. There are some tears and small areas of paper loss at the top and bottom of the spine, and slightly in the edges of the rest of the jacket. The inside cover of the jacket was diagonally clipped where the price was. The dust jacket is in a protective sleeve. Learn More about condition grades
