An Original Vintage Linenbacked Australian World War I Poster (measures 12 1/2" x 40 1/4" [32 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Belgian Day Was a Debt of Honor. Red Cross Day is a Debt of Love!!!, the 1915 Australian World War I (WWI) Red Cross charity poster encouraging people to donate to help the people of Belgium. Germany invaded neutral Belgium in 1914 and the country was occupied until 1918. Germany hoped to capture Paris quickly by invading through neutral countries, and the German invaders were outraged at how Belgium had frustrated their plans and their response is known today as The Rape of Belgium (a series of multiple large-scale attacks on civilians and the destruction of historic buildings and cultural centers). The British were quick to tell the world about German atrocities, and the 1915 "Bryce Report" was a major factor in changing public opinion in neutral countries, especially the United States. Belgium faced a food crisis and an international response was organized by future President Herbert Hoover at the request of Emile Francqui, who realized that the only way to avoid a famine in Belgium was through imports from overseas.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had stains by the words "RED CROSS" and a few others scattered throughout the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. It was backed on a thin linen with no excess.
