eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 5m0007 LOT OF 25 KING OF THE JUNGLE 8X10 STILLS 1933 director Humberstone's wild animal candids! Date Sold 8/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 25 8x10 stills from King of the Jungle, the 1933 H. Bruce Humberstone & Max Marcin African safari action adventure melodrama ("The Serialplay Extraordinary") starring Buster Crabbe (billed as "The Lion Man"), Frances Dee, Sidney Toler, Nydia Westman, Robert Barrat, and Irving Pichel. Note that Buster Crabbe had been strongly considered for the role of Tarzan in 1932's "Tarzan the Ape Man", but Johnny Weissmuller was chosen over him, and when Paramount looked to make a copycat Tarzan movie the following year, they naturally turned to Buster Crabbe for the part of "Kaspa the Lion Man" (unlike Tarzan, who was a child raised in the jungle by apes, Kaspa was a child raised in the jungle by lions, a distinction that surely did not amuse either Edgar Rice Burroughs or MGM!). Note that this lot and 21 others we are currently auctioning, were owned by director H. Bruce Humberstone (nicknamed "Lucky"). He was born in 1901 and he started as a juvenile actor, and in his teens, he became a script clerk, and then worked his way up to being an assistant director to many top directors, including King Vidor. In 1932, he directed his first movie, and he worked steadily through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, directing one last movie in 1961. He directed both "A" and "B" movies, including some Tarzan, Charlie Chan, Cisco Kid, and more, and some of his movies have cult status, including "I Wake Up Screaming"! The 22 lots we are currently auctioning include a large number of stills (many of them key books and some include lots of incredible candids showing Humberstone) from movies that he either directed or was the assistant director on, and there are also some non-still items as well, including his personal phone/address book, which had the phone numbers of all the top stars of that time! This is a rare opportunity to obtain large numbers of guaranteed original stills and other items from Humberstone movies that were the property of the man himself! Condition: fine. The stills were stored in a brown Paramount Publix Corporation envelope since they were created, and as noted above, these were director Humberstone's personal stills, and they are in remarkable condition! We still have the brown envelope, and it has "King of the Jungle stills" and "Mr. Humberstone" written under it in pencil, and we will send it together with the stills (we did not photograph the envelope).
