An Original Vintage Theatrical Silk Banner Movie Poster (measures 39 1/2" x 51 3/4" [100 x 131 cm]) (Learn More)

Jamaica Inn, the 1939 Alfred Hitchcock English crime adventure thriller ("From the novel by Daphne du Maurier"; about a young Englishwoman who goes to live with her aunt and discovers a gang of thieves living next door) starring Charles Laughton, Maureen O'Hara (in her third movie role!), Leslie Banks, Horace Hodges, Hay Petrie, Frederick Piper, Robert Newton, and Emlyn Williams

Important Added Info: Note that the vast majority of silk banners are on a creamy white silk that gives the banner a white background. This banner is on a purple silk that makes it one of the most striking silk banners I have ever seen! Also note that in the 1930s and 1940s, movie studios made silk burgees (also called silk banners) for most major releases. These were printed on a silk (or silk-like) material, sometimes with a gold fringe at the bottom, and usually with an opening at the top through which a wooden pole could be inserted, usually with a rope attached to both ends of the pole, so that the burgee could be hung from a nail at the theater. Few silk burgees are known to survive (we have only auctioned around a dozen of them in our many years of auctioning), and many collectors are not even aware of their existence! We have just been consigned a remarkable find of TWENTY THREE of these silk banners! That is double the amount we auctioned in all our previous 25 years of auctioning. Each of these 23 silk banners are currently at auction individually. This is a very rare opportunity to purchase one or many of this extremely rare size of original 1930s and 1940s movie posters!

Condition: very good to fine. There are some creases scattered throughout the banner, more so around the edges. Otherwise, the banner is in excellent condition (likely in the very best condition of any of these banners I have ever seen!). Note that banners like these are extremely rare (see above) and the few that survive often have deterioration in the silk or in the fringe, and sometimes the pole is missing or damaged. Some of this collection of 23 silk banners that this banner was found with have survived in better condition than the majority of the similar silk banners we have seen in the past.
