Date Sold 8/23/2020 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 354 key book stills from Happy Go Lovely. This lot contains two "key books", each of which has metal screw posts on one side and each has black pages that have 8x10 stills glued to each side of each black page. One of the key books measures 3" high, and the other measures 2" high. Between those two key books, they have 262 stills glued into them. There are also 92 8x10 stills that are "loose", and are not glued, but it looks like the person who was assembling the key books simply didn't finish the job, and that those 92 stills belong with the others. We photographed all of the 92 loose stills, and a number of 2-page key book spreads, but only a small percentage of the total number of stills in this lot have been photographed, because it would have taken a very long time to photograph all the key book pages. The winner of this auction will receive all 354 stills, the 262 in the two key books, and the 92 others! Of course, Happy Go Lovely is the 1951 H. Bruce Humberstone English romantic dance musical ("RKO's happy rainbow of rhythm and romance!"; "Love. Fun. Youth. Set to music!"; "Screenplay by Val Guest") starring David Niven, Vera-Ellen, Cesar Romero, Bobby Howes, and Diane Hart. Measurements: from 8" x 10" to 9 1/2" x 12 1/2"Note that this lot and 21 others we are currently auctioning, were owned by director H. Bruce Humberstone (nicknamed "Lucky"). He was born in 1901 and he started as a juvenile actor, and in his teens, he became a script clerk, and then worked his way up to being an assistant director to many top directors, including King Vidor. In 1932, he directed his first movie, and he worked steadily through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, directing one last movie in 1961. He directed both "A" and "B" movies, including some Tarzan, Charlie Chan, Cisco Kid, and more, and some of his movies have cult status, including "I Wake Up Screaming"! The 22 lots we are currently auctioning include a large number of stills (many of them key books and some include lots of incredible candids showing Humberstone) from movies that he either directed or was the assistant director on, and there are also some non-still items as well, including his personal phone/address book, which had the phone numbers of all the top stars of that time! This is a rare opportunity to obtain large numbers of guaranteed original stills and other items from Humberstone movies that were the property of the man himself! Condition: very good to fine. As noted above, 262 of the stills were glued onto the key book pages, as intended, and are otherwise in excellent condition. The 92 loose stills are in really nice condition as well!
