A 1960 Re-Release Theatrical Folded Autographed One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) King of the Congo ("The Mighty Thunda"), the 1952 Spencer Gordon Bennet (billed as "Spencer Bennet") & Wallace Grissell jungle action adventure fantasy serial ("Crash of Doom!"; "Quest of 'The Strange Mist!"; "Firing squad escape!"; "Based on Adventures of the Dynamic Hero of 'Thunda' Cartoon Magazine"; "A Columbia Super-Serial"; adapted from the comic book character drawn by Frank Frazetta!) starring Buster Crabbe ( in the title role "as Thunda"), Gloria Dea, Leonard Penn, Jack Ingram, Rick Vallin, and Steve Calvert (as the man in the gorilla suit!). Note that in 1948, Steve Calvert bought Ray 'Crash' Corrigan's gorilla costume, which Corrigan had been using in movies since at least 1932. He appeared in 12 movies between 1948 and 1958 as a gorilla wearing Corrigan's costume! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Glenn Cravath Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Buster Crabbe! Note that this is a "stock" poster created by Columbia for use for all chapters of their "King of the Congo" serial. Theaters would order this poster, which had a large blank rectangle in the bottom left. They would be sent a series of large paper snipes with the titles of specific chapters of the serial, and they could paste in each snipe as needed, thus getting many posters for the price of one. There were also stock posters from this serial that were overprinted with the names of the specific chapters, for theaters willing to purchase an entire set of them. This particular stock poster has a blank white area, indicating it likely was never used. Note that this item was consigned to us by a man who has been a major movie memorabilia dealer from the 1970s on. During that time, he would regularly purchase collections of movie memorabilia from both dealers and collectors, and in some of those collections he purchased autographed items. Both we and our consignor feel it is extremely likely that the autograph on this item is authentic, but he does not have a certificate of authenticity. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
