An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Accidents Will Happen, the 1938 William Clemens romantic love triangle insurance fraud crime thriller ("The fake accident racket exposed!"; about an insurance investigator who has a very ambitious wife, and she borrows money from a loan company, and when she can't pay it back, she participates in insurance fraud, knowing her husband will be the investigator, and will trust her, which he does; but he is caught and fired, and when he learns it was his wife's fault, he leaves her; he takes up with a cigarette girl, and together they pull off insurance frauds; then they get involved with a big insurance fraud that is run by the head of a bogus company; but when he discovers his ex-wife is in on the fraud, he turns state's evidence against the whole gang, and they are all sent to jail, including his ex-wife, and he gets his old job back!) starring Ronald Reagan, Gloria Blondell (younger sister of actress Joan Blondell), Dick Purcell, Hugh O'Connell, and Sheila Bromley. Note that this was an unusual role for Ronald Reagan, who usually played very clean cut characters! Also note that Gloria Blondell apparently got her start in movies thanks to her sister Joan, with a supporting role in the movie she made before this. But apparently she did not catch on at all, because after this starring role, she was reduced to minor supporting roles, and some TV.

Important Added Info: This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny bits of paper loss in the top quarter of the vertical fold, with minor wear on the other folds. There were some pinholes around the edges and some writing on the back of the top that very slightly bled through to the front in Reagan's forehead. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
