George K. Arthur was an actor from the 1910s to the 1930s. Some of his movies include: The Salvation Hunters, Spring Fever, and Chasing Rainbows. He became a major MGM star in the later 1920s, often appearing with Karl Dane. But because Dane had a thick Danish accent, their team had little success in sound movies. He and Dane appeared in vaudeville together, and after that did not work out, he went into non-acting endeavors, with little success (but at least things went better for him than for poor Karl Dane, who, after no success at all, bought a hot dog cart, and set it up outside MGM studios, where he had been a star, likely thinking he would get much sympathy business, but after a while, he couldn't take the humiliation, and killed himself)! Karl Dane (nicknamed "The Great Dane") was born in 1886. Long before M.C. Hammer or any of the many others in show business who went from huge success to total failure, there was Karl Dane, perhaps the saddest story of them all. He became a giant star after appearing in a major role in The Big Parade (1925), and then became one of MGM's foremost stars in the later 1920s, often appearing with George K. Arthur. But he had a very thick Danish accent, and he had zero success in sound movies, and the only parts he could get were given to him by good friend Buster Keaton. In 1934 he gave up on Hollywood, planning to become a plumber, and to support himself he bought a hot dog cart, and he set it up outside MGM studios, where he had been a star, likely thinking he would get much sympathy business there. He no doubt did, but his brain couldn't take the humiliation, and he went home and killed himself. He is also best remembered for his roles in The Son of the Sheik, Navy Blues, and The Trail of '98.

Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by BOTH George K. Arthur AND Karl Dane! Our consignor is a very longtime collector of movie paper who purchased this item from a shop in Copenhagen, Denmark many years ago, but he doesn't know how the signatures were obtained, and he (and we) believe it is very likely that the autographs are authentic. Given that Dane died so long ago, we would think his autograph is rare, especially on a photo with his most famous acting partner. Also note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 7 1/4" x 9 1/4" [18 x 23 cm].
