An Original Vintage Souvenir Stage Play Program Book (measures 9" x 11 3/4" [23 x 30 cm]; 16 pages) (Learn More) Streets of Paris the 1939-1940 Edward Duryea Dowling Broadway musical sketch comedy stage play production (written by Tom McKnight, Charles Sherman, S. Jay Kaufman, Mitchell Hodges, Edward Duryea Dowling, James La Ver, Frank Eyton & Lee Brody) starring Bobby Clark, Luella Gear, Bud Abbott, Lou Costello (Abbott & Costello), and Carmen Miranda. Note that this play is best remembered for being the Broadway debut of Abbott & Costello! They had been on the Kate Smith radio show for a year and a half before this, and ten months after this play closed, they made their movie debut in "One Night in the Tropics"! Artist: HKS Important Added Info: Note that we have pictured the front cover and two interior 2-page spreads from this program (including, of course, the Abbott & Costello page!). Note that there is something fascinating about this program. It was surely printed when the play first began, and Abbott & Costello get third billing, and there is a great full-page image of them with a long paragraph about them. But included with this program is a local theater playbill from February 12, 1940, which was actually two days after the show closed, so obviously, that local theater playbill was printed in advance and given out at their last shows, so likely this was from one of those very last performances. But what makes it really bittersweet is that also included is a 3 1/4" x 5" "change of program" card, which says "Due to the illness of Mr. Costello - the characters played by Abbott and Costello will now be played by Sid Marion and Cliff (Sharlie) Hall"! So the poor soul who attended this show had a chance to see Abbott and Costello in their Broadway debut, but instead saw Marion and Hall. What bad luck! Both these items are not pictured but will be sent together with this rare historic program, and they are surely incredibly rare, and a must have for any Abbott & Costello collector. You can use these images to determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are some other pages you are not seeing. Condition: very good to fine.
