Stein silent pre-revolutionary Russia/Austria nobility rape revenge romantic melodrama ("From the play by A.C. Gunter"; a pretty unbelievable story of a young Russian woman who is raped by the son of a nobleman and then she is railroaded on false charges, but the rapist feels sorry afterward, so he helps her escape to Vienna, where she becomes a famous cabaret dancer; years later, the rapist follows her there and she doesn't recognize him and he falls in love with her; then she realizes who he is and goes back to Russia with him to get her revenge; after the Revolution, he escapes to Vienna, where he is destitute, and she takes him in, and they fall in love) starring Irene Rich, Conway Tearle, Stuart Holmes, John Miljan, Gustav von Seyffertitz, and Jane Winton. Note that director Paul L. Stein was an Austrian who became an actor in Germany in 1915, but who started directing and went to the U.S., where he had success directing "women's pictures". He went to England in 1931 and stayed there until his passing in 1951. He is completely forgotten today, but he achieved some significant success in his lifetime. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Mr. Clemens Important Added Info: Note that this is one of four original paintings that were created for a local theater in the 1920s. At that time, theaters would often hire local artists to create hand painted individual posters for newly released movies (the most famous of these was Batiste Madelena, who created hundreds of such posters for the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York, between 1924 and 1928). Many of these posters were painted on a heavy poster board, and they are often around a one-sheet size. This poster was created on a heavy board and must be sent in a very large flat package, so bear that cost of shipping in mind before placing a bid on this poster. Finally, note that the art is signed by "Mr. Clemens" in 1926, who apparently worked at the Alvin Wolfson Studios. Condition: fair. The painting is on a heavy poster board and will need to be shipped flat. It is very fragile, more so around the edges, and it has cracks, tears, and small paper loss around the edges. There is much staining scattered in the image. It definitely needs restoration, but afterward, it will look quite nice. But do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its condition defects, its need of restoration, and the cost of shipping it in a very large flat package. Learn More about condition grades
