Die Spinnen, 1. Teil - Der Goldene See (literally translates to "The Spiders, Part 1 - The Golden Lake"), the 1919 Fritz Lang German silent Inca treasure romantic love triangle adventure mystery thriller (about a world adventurer in San Francisco, California, who finds a literal message in a bottle that tells of a lost Incan civilization, and he mounts an expedition to go there, and a crime syndicate learns of his plans, and sends their own expedition, headed by a beautiful evil woman; the adventurer finds the civilization, which is headed by a beautiful queen, and he falls in love with her and takes her back; the evil woman declares her love for him, but he chooses his Incan queen over her, which causes her to murder the queen, and the adventurer swears he will get vengeance!) starring Carl de Vogt, Ressel Orla, Georg John, Lil Dagover, and Paul Biensfeldt. It is obvious that this movie greatly influenced "Journey to the Center of the Earth", as well as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (and no doubt many others!). Note that this was the first part of a project four film series. Part 2 was made the following year, and it was called "Das Brillantenschiff" (The Diamond Ship). In this part, the adventurer is chasing a Buddha-shaped diamond with magical powers, and he hooks up with the beautiful daughter of the head of a diamond syndicate, but the beautiful evil woman from part 1 is also after the diamond, and the search for it takes them all over the world, and at the end, they find the diamond in a cave, but poisonous fumes enter the cave and kill all the bad guys, and only the adventurer survives (it is obvious that the writers of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" were very familiar with the plot of this movie!). Parts 3 and 4 were never made (they were given titles that were "Um Asiens Kaiserkrone" [To the Imperial Crown of Asia] and "Im Spinnennetz" [In the Cobweb]).

Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" item for this German movie! Also note that in the 1920s and 1930s in Germany, it became a common practice to pass out 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" "Ross postcards" to the people who attended a movie. These were postcards that people could send through the mail (each had a picture of one of the movie's stars on it, and standard postcard markings on the other side). But these were also sent to theaters where the stars would make personal appearances, and members of the audience would get the stars to autograph them if they could, but of course, the cards themselves did not come autographed! Sometimes the theaters would cut four slits in the upper left of the front cover of the program for that movie and have the "Ross postcards" inserted into that area, so that the audience members would get the program and the card together! We imagine that theaters hoped that audience members would mail the postcards after they saw the movie to friends, telling them how much they enjoyed it, thus creating advertising for the movie. These are often called "Ross autograph cards" by collectors, because moviegoers did often obtain autographs on them. Ross postcards are quite collectible, signed or unsigned, but of course, they are worth far more signed. They are often quite rare, because most German paper of all kinds from before World War II was destroyed during the war, due to the massive paper shortages there at that time.
