An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #12 (The Elusive Treasure Box) 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Lobby Card (Learn More) The Million Dollar Mystery, the 1914 Howell Hansel silent mystery adventure serial ("Thanhouser's million dollar motion picture production now appearing serially in the Phil'a. Evening Telegraph"; "$10,000 for 100 words"; the studio held a contest which offered a $10,000 prize to whoever submitted the best resolution to this mystery serial) starring Florence La Badie, Marguerite Snow, James Cruze, Frank Farrington, and Sidney Bracey. Note that there was another serial from the following year named "The Diamond in the Sky", which also offered a giant cash prize to one of the people who submitted a plot, and in both cases (that movie and this one), we suspect that they were actually publicity stunts, and that the money was not actually given away! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a different 8x10 lobby card from this movie until we received this lobby card (and NO other movie paper). Of course, there is no way of knowing for certain that this is from 1914. It could be from an early re-release of the movie, surely from later in the 1910s. Please do not bid on this unless you can accept this uncertainty Also note that there is writing on the back that reads "Property of Michael Ray Hawks", who most would consider the premier lobby card collector and expert in the world (and he is still an active collector, looking for the last few items he needs!). Note that, in the early days of movie making, when lobby cards were first made (around 1915), studios would issue sets of the cards in two sizes; the regular 11" x 14" size, and a smaller 8" x 10" size. The cards were identical in every way except for the different size. This practice continued through the early 1920s, at which point the studios abandoned the smaller lobby cards, likely because theaters either ordered 11" x 14" lobby cards or 8" x 10" stills, and did not order enough of the 8" x 10" lobby cards to justify them continuing to make them.
