The Miracle Man, the 1932 Norman Z. McLeod gang-uses-faith-healer-to-scam-people crime melodrama (based on the play by George M. Cohan) starring Sylvia Sidney, Chester Morris, Irving Pichel, John Wray, Robert Coogan, Hobart Bosworth, Boris Karloff (in a small role as a tavern owner!), Ned Sparks, Lloyd Hughes, Virginia Bruce, Florine McKinney, Frank Darien, and Lew Kelly. Note that this movie was made on April 1, 1932, and Frankenstein had been released in November of 1931. But obviously, this movie was in production in late 1931, and Paramount did not realize how big a star Karloff would be from Frankenstein, so even though it was released months later (and six films later), Boris Karloff was not pictured on any of the posters, and because he was seventh billed in the movie, he was not billed on any of the posters either, because the most credits any of them had was six. So if you are a Boris Karloff collector, and want something showing him from this movie, your best hope is the lobby cards. But because this is a Paramount movie, and because Paramount did not make title cards at this time, the only way to get Karloff on a lobby card is to get one of the two lobby cards that picture him, but they are extremely rare! Finally, note that the studio must have prepared the posters before Frankenstein had its great success, but they did manage to add in a last minute text credit for Boris Karloff in the pressbook that reads, "Boris Karloff, the monster of 'Frankenstein', brings a sensational ability into his underworld character of 'Nikko'."!

Important Added Info: Note that this is the A.L. Burt Company photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: A.L. Burt (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. Oddly, in the case of this movie edition, they did not include any images from the movie within the book, but the stars' images are on the cover of the dust jacket. Perhaps it was published before the movie even was ready, so they did not have access to images from the film. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book.

Condition: good. The dust jacket is in a protective sleeve.
