A Group of 2 Original Vintage English Movie Cards (the cigarette card measures 2 1/2" x 3" [6 x 8 cm] and the postcard measures 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" [9 x 14 cm]) (Learn More)

The Manxman, the 1929 Alfred Hitchcock English silent romantic love triangle melodrama ("A screen adaptation of Sir Hall Caine's famous novel"; set on the Isle of Man, where some of the filming was done, about two men who grew up like brothers, but one becomes a fisherman and the other becomes a lawyer, and then the fisherman falls in love a young woman, and she agrees to marry him, and when he goes off on a long fishing trip, he asks his best friend to take care of her, not realizing he also loves her; the fisherman is thought to have been killed, and the lawyer does not have to hide his love for the girl, but then they learn that the fisherman is still alive!) starring Carl Brisson, Malcolm Keen, Anny Ondra, Randle Ayrton, and Clare Greet (billed as "Claire Greet"). Note that this was Alfred Hitchcock's final silent movie. There are not many intertitles, as Hitchcock preferred to let the viewer see what was happening rather than being told. There is a key moment in the film when the girl separately tells each of the two men that she is going to have a baby, and in both cases there is no intertitle (the viewer has to either read her lips, or deduce what was said by the man's reaction!).

Important Added Info: Note this is a very unusual pair of items, both related to this Alfred Hitchcock movie from 1929. One is an English cigarette card from Love Scenes from Famous Films (see our image of the front and back). The other is really odd. It is a postcard that was never mailed, but which was glued in an album. It is clearly vintage, and it has a frame enlargement of Anny Ondra from this movie, and it has "Aug 1928", Anny Ondra's name, "British International Pictures", and "The Manxman Polperro" (Polperro was the small village in Cornwall where this movie was filmed). Our consignor thinks that someone connected with the movie had this postcard made while the movie was being filmed, and then wrote the information about it on it, likely intending to send it to someone, but they obviously never did. While it is certainly possible that Anny Ondra herself signed the card and wrote the information, we think it is more likely that someone else wrote it, after comparing it to Anny Ondra's signatures. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good to very good. The cigarette card is in nice condition. The postcard has paper residue on the back from where it was glued to an album and scuffing around the edges of the front (see our images).
