An Original Vintage Autographed German 3 1/2" x 5 1/4" [9 x 13 cm] Postcard (Learn More) Paul Wegener was a Prussian-born (in what is now Poland) actor from the 1910s to the 1940s. He was born in 1874, and initially studied to be a lawyer, but decided to become an actor. In 1913, he heard about the Jewish legend of a monster created by a rabbi, called "The Golem", and he was fascinated by it, and he wrote a treatment for a movie about it, Der Golem, which was made in 1915, with Wegener in the title role (he was 6' 6", which no doubt helped!), and he also co-directed and wrote the screenplay. It was a major success in Germany and he made two sequels, one in 1917 and the second in 1920, which was kind of a remake of the first movie, and it was released internationally and gave him worldwide fame. Unlike many of his fellow actors and directors, he was favored by the Nazi regime, but he is reported to have detested the Nazis and help resistance groups during the war. After the war, he tried to help actors and directors who had suffered, and he helped rebuild the German cinema. He passed away in 1948 at the age of 73. Important Added Info: Note that this postcard has been personally autographed (signed) by Paul Wegener! Note that this is from a remarkable collection of 26 items (mostly postcards and German Ross postcards) we were consigned from the estate of the late Jan Wahl. Mr. Wahl wrote over 100 children's books and received many awards, including the Coretta Scott King Prize. Throughout his career, he had a great love of silent film, and he collected many items from silent films, including the 26 items we are currently auctioning. Some of them are framed, because they were on the walls of Mr. Wahl's house! Finally, note that this does not come with a certificate of authenticity, but given the fact that Mr. Wahl purchased this item decades ago, and given that he was an expert in such items, we think it is incredibly likely the signature is authentic. This is a rare opportunity to purchase autographed items from great silent film stars that have a wonderful provenance! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.
