An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Paris, the 1935 Lewis Seiler France Asian detective mystery crime thriller (based on the characters by Earl Derr Biggers) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Mary Brian, Thomas Beck, Erik Rhodes, Keye Luke, Dorothy Appleby, John Miljan, and Henry Kolker. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had 3" trimmed off from the top blank area. It had a semi-circular tear in the top right corner that separated the top right of the image (in the top right of Oland's hair). There were three irregular tears in the lower right corner of the image, extending into the arm of the dead body. There were some pinholes, creases, and tears around the edges, with a few within the image. There were some smudges and dot stains scattered in the card. Overall, the card was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. The card was pretty well backed, and it displays pretty well, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, and at some point after it was backed, it suffered surface paper loss in the bottom right blank corner (any restorer could easily repair that area without re-backing the card).
