An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11 1/2" x 14" [29 x 36 cm]; 6 pages). Also included is an ad supplement that has one page (measures 14" x 34" when unfolded). (Learn More)

Adventures of Smilin' Jack, the 1942 Lewis D. Collins & Ray Taylor military airplane aviation action adventure serial ("13 Thrill-Blasted Chapters!"; "Original Screen Play by Morgan B. Cox"; "Based upon the newspaper feature entitled 'Smilin' Jack' by Zack Mosley") starring Tom Brown (in the title role as Smilin' Jack Martin), Marjorie Lord, Rose Hobart, Edgar Barrier, Turhan Bey, Keye Luke, Sidney Toler, and Philip Ahn. Note that this movie was set just before World War II, and in it the Chinese and Americans work together to stop the Germans and the Japanese, and both Sidney Toler and Keye Luke played Asian characters, just as they did in the Charlie Chan movies!

Important Added Info: Note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Note that this pressbook was printed on a large 14" x 34" sheet that was tri-folded to create six "pages". We have provided images of the entire interior three pages and the entire exterior three pages, as well as a separate image of the cover. In addition, we have pictured the supplement completely opened (it is folded into the pressbook, but measures 14" x 34" when unfolded). Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut!

Note that we are auctioning 74 pressbooks in this Part II of our March Major Auction. 62 of those come from a single collector who was attempting to assemble EVERY pressbook from movie serials that were based on either comic book or comic strip characters, and he spent many decades doing so, and he came very close to getting every one there is! These include many that we have never auctioned in all our years of auctioning, and may well never auction them again! This is a very rare opportunity for collectors to acquire these ultra rare pressbooks (which are even more rare than the posters from these same serials, likely because they were sent to very few theaters, and likely most of those theaters immediately threw them out). If one started to try to assemble a similar collection without purchasing any of these pressbooks, they would likely spend many years before they could acquire even a small percentage of them. That is how rare these are!

Condition: good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. There are two 6" tears on the back cover and they go into two of the poster images, but there is no paper loss. The pressbook was folded across the middle and there are some tiny chips and tiny paper loss around the edges. There is a stamp on the cover. We could re-fold it for shipping, but it seems a shame to do so, so we will only do so if the new owner requests that we do so.
