An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed Movie Lobby Card #5 (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Hud, the classic 1963 Martin Ritt (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Texas family relationship modern-day-cowboy cattle rancher melodrama ("Paul Newman is 'HUD'! The man with the barbed wire soul!"; "Why 'Hud'?"; "Because of the unusual nature of this film we will not reveal the story"; "From a novel by Larry McMurtry"; about one of the screen's all time greatest heels, Hud Bannon, superlatively played by Paul Newman who was robbed of an Oscar) starring Paul Newman (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Hud), Melvyn Douglas (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Patricia Neal (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Brandon DeWilde, and Whit Bissell. Note that this movie was originally titled "Hud Bannon", but the title was shortened to simply "Hud". Paramount was worried about how the movie would do, especially because its central character was such an unlikable person, and they created a VERY unusual ad campaign, starting with a 24-sheet that solely showed an image of Newman in a small part of it, with the words "Why Hud?", and much of the 24-sheet blank. They wanted to create a mystery as to what the movie was about, in the hopes that people would not have preconceived notions and go see it, feeling that once they did, they would recognize what a quality movie it was, and this marketing strategy obviously worked, because the movie was very successful! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Note that our consignor purchased a collection of autographed lobby cards that were collected by Leonard Sorgi, who was a unit manager for ABC for shows like The Soupy Sales Show, The Jerry Mahoney Show, and many others. He was also Unit Manager for the Academy Awards for a number of years, and during his long and varied career, he met many celebrities and obtained autographs from them in person (often personalized to him). In the past, we have auctioned many signed stills from Mr. Sorgi's amazing collection, and just a few lobby cards, but in this set of auctions, we are auctioning 156 signed lobby cards, all at one time (we are also auctioning some more signed stills from the same collection)! Our consignor (and we) feel certain that the autograph on this card is authentic! This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase many great signed lobby cards. Condition: good to very good.
