Schaffner French/U.S. prison escape crime adventure thriller ("The greatest adventure of escape!", "The greatest adventure of escape ever filmed!"; "Two men with nothing in common but a will to live and a place to die."; "Based on the book by Henri Charriere"; about the only man to ever escape from the famous French prison "Devil's Island") starring Steve McQueen (in the title role as as Henri 'Papillon' Charriere), Dustin Hoffman (as Louis Dega), Victor Jory, Don Gordon, and Anthony Zerbe NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Tom Jung Important Added Info: Note that this is the one-sheet for the very first release of this film by Allied Artists. Shortly after this release, the film was released by a major studio, with new posters. What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction either was not linenbacked all that well, OR the poster had more significant defects that were well corrected or both (you can tell which type it is by reading our written comments about the poster's condition). In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: good to very good. There is some darkening in the bottom of the vertical foldline. The poster has fine surface paper loss on parts of some foldlines (typical of high-gloss posters of this period). Note that this is one of a large group of one-sheets we were consigned, which were all linenbacked by the same restorer. They are all posters from the 1970s to present, and they were simply mounted onto a very thin linen backing, with approximately 2" of excess linen left of on all four sides of the poster. We are not really sure what purpose the backing served, because the posters had little wrong with them to begin with (and the restorer simply backed them without performing restoration), and the restorer left more excess linen than is normal, but some or all of it could easily be trimmed off.
