An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 41" x 81") (Learn More)

Sunset Boulevard (sometimes spelled as "Sunset Blvd."), the classic 1950 Billy Wilder (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Hollywood Los Angeles California behind-the-scenes movie-making romantic love triangle crime film noir ("A most unusual picture"; "A Hollywood Story"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring William Holden (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Gloria Swanson (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Erich von Stroheim (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Nancy Olson (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough, Jack Webb, Cecil B. DeMille (the legendary director, playing a great cameo role as himself!), Hedda Hopper, Buster Keaton, Anna Q. Nilsson, H.B. Warner, and Franklyn Farnum. This is surely one of the finest movies ever made, with remarkable performances, writing, and direction, and if you haven't seen it, you should!

Condition: good. This poster was linenbacked, but it was either NOT linenbacked by a very talented restorer, OR it was linenbacked many years ago, and has received rough handling over the years, OR it had fairly significant defects that were not well restored. If it was restored, you can clearly see signs of the restoration even from a distance. This is a poster that would surely benefit from additional professional restoration. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!).

The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds and many small tears and small areas of paper loss on the vertical foldlines in the bottom 1/3 of the poster (this was originally a separate piece of the poster). The top 2/3 of the poster had small tears and small areas of paper loss down much of the middle vertical foldline, with much lesser wear on the other two vertical foldlines, and the horizontal foldline. There were some smudges and stains around the edges of the poster. The person who linenbacked the poster did a pretty good job, but they used some sort of airbrushing in many of the white background areas at the bottom of the poster, and it has changed color significantly, so that it does not at all blend in, and looks awful. There was also red paint restoration to much of the solid red background area, which the restorer did to "even out" the color. I feel it is likely that a good restorer could touch up the areas in the white background that have aged poorly without re-backing the poster, although they might well suggest re-backing it. Once the poster is re-restored, it will look great, but it will have a good amount of paint restoration in the white and red background areas.
