An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) They Drive By Night (released in England as "The Road to Frisco"), the 1940 Raoul Walsh trucker romantic love triangle action melodrama ("No picture in 1940 will have bigger thrills!"; "From a Novel by A.I. Bezzerides"; about truckers and their love lives; it stole part of its plot from "Bordertown"!) starring George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, Alan Hale Sr., Gale Page, Roscoe Karns, John Litel, Charles Halton, Charles C. Wilson, George Tobias, and Henry O'Neill. Note that movies rarely have top stars in all four lead roles (other than MGM movies of the 1930s and early 1940s, because they had so many such stars that they could afford to do this), but this movie is kind of a rare exception. We say "kind of" because Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino were not yet top stars when they made this movie, but the very next movie they made was "High Sierra", which did help elevate both of them to greater stardom! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is extremely rare! We have only auctioned it once before, and that was nine years ago. It is probably so rare because the movie not only received a quick re-release in 1948, but it received a quick second re-release in 1956, which likely used up whatever was left of the original movie paper. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had an oval-shaped area of paper loss at the middle crossfold and many small tears scattered down the vertical fold. Someone once put tape on the back of all those small tears, and it slightly bled through to the front. There was also a piece of tape on the back of a vertical tear just to the left of the top and bottom crossfolds, and that tape also slightly bled through to the front. The poster had minor wear on the horizontal folds and a few small tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone had the poster mounted onto a very thin linen, and slight restoration was performed to the vertical fold. If I owned this wonderful and very rare poster, I would surely immediately have it removed from the thin linen and properly re-backed, and afterwards, it would look fantastic, and it will only require paint restoration in the vertical fold, as described above, and in the border tears.
