An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Standee (measures 32 1/2" x 59" [83 x 150 cm]) (Learn More) Down Among the Sheltering Palms, the 1953 Edmund Goulding tropical island romantic military musical comedy ("Based on a Story by Edward Hope"; "8 Great Songs") starring William Lundigan, Jane Greer, Mitzi Gaynor, David Wayne, Gloria De Haven, Gene Lockhart, Jack Paar, Alvin Greenman, Billy Gilbert, and Henry Kulky. Note that this movie was filmed in 1951, and movie paper was prepared for its release in that year (with a 1951 NSS number), but the movie was delayed and not released until 1953, at which time new movie paper was created with 1953 NSS numbers. Given that this movie bears a striking resemblance to "South Pacific" (it combines plot elements of that play with others from "Teahouse of the August Moon"), which had not yet been filmed, but which was a hit Broadway musical in 1951, it seems likely that the release of this movie was delayed because of litigation. If anyone knows more about the delay of the release of this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here.no. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is from the aborted 1951 release of this movie (there was 1953 movie paper printed, after the movie was finally released that year). Note that several months ago, we were consigned around a dozen standees that were similar to this one. Just about every one of them is "die-cut", meaning that they are cut around the edges to the shape of the image. But while those were from the same time period, they had been poorly stored, and most were quite musty and had other condition issues. NOW WE HAVE BEEN CONSIGNED A DIFFERENT MUCH LARGER GROUP OF 85 STANDEES LIKE THESE, BUT WHILE THESE ALSO HAVE CONDITION ISSUES, THEY ARE NOT "MUSTY" LIKE THE EARLIER ONES WERE! They were apparently stored far better, and while they have aged over the past 60 or 70 years, but most of the defects were likely acquired when they were first used. See the condition area below for a full description of the condition each standee is in, but know that this is a remarkable collection that was well stored for many decades (and standees like this have always been quite rare, because few survived, likely because theaters discarded them after using them)! There are two circular pieces of cardboard attached to the back of the standee that once had a string between them (this is how the standees were originally made), but the strings are no longer present, pretty unusual for standees of this age. This does not have any kind of regular standee backing. We are guessing that you were supposed to lean the standee against a pole and tie the strings from the circles around the pole, but that is just a guess! Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. If it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube (like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. Condition: fair to good. There are some smudges and stains scattered in the image (including in the stars). It also has many horizontal scuffs scattered throughout through the standee and some creases around the edges. The die-cut areas have only slight wear, which is very unusual in standees like these (see our image). There is paper loss in the bottom left corner. Learn More about condition grades
