An Original 1945 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Folded French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 1/2" x 31 1/4" [60 x 79 cm]) (Learn More) Soldats sans uniforme (literally translates to "Soldiers Without Uniform"), the 1944 E.G. de Meyst (Emile-Georges de Meyst) Belgian World War II (WWII) resistance fighters melodrama (as noted below, director Meyst started filming his trilogy of World War II movies in Occupied Belgium in 1944, before the war was over!; how did he do this?; he told his actors and crew they were filming a crime movie, and even they were kept in the dark as to the true nature of the movie; as soon as the war was over, he finished filming it with its true intent, and thus it was able to be released immediately as the war ended in December 1944, and is likely the earliest prisoner of war World War II movie!) starring Rene Herde, Andre Gevrey, Simone Poncin, Jos Gevers, Maurice Auzat, and Marcel Berteau. Note that director E.G. de Meyst was a major early director (and one of the only successful Belgian directors ever), but he is completely forgotten today except by major film buffs. He made his first movie in Belgium in 1923 when he was 21 (financed by a loan from his mother!), and he went to Paris where he met Abel Gance, who saw his ability, but was most impressed by his use of mirrors to make it appear that there were many more people on screen then there actually were (Gance would use Meyst's technique in his masterpiece, Napoleon, in 1927). de Meyst would return to Belgium and return to France, due to the difficulties of making movies in Belgium, which, unlike France had almost no film industry. In 1936 he made "Le Mort", which many consider his best movie, and he played the starring role! Starting in 1944 he made a trilogy of three prisoner-of-war films: the first one was this movie, "Soldats sans uniforme", the second one was "Baraques 1" (a year later) and the third was "Forcats d'Honneur" in 1946. Original poster material from any of these three movies is virtually non-existent. He continued making some movies until 1962, and he then retired, and he passed away in 1989 at the age of 87, almost completely forgotten. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that any movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this French poster, and, as noted above, this is the first of a trilogy of prisoner of war movies by this director, and posters of any kind from the second and third movies in the trilogy are as rare as posters from this first movie! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: fair to good. The poster is very fragile. It has small paper loss at the crossfold and pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges, with some darkening and tiny bits of paper loss on the folds. But fortunately, the defects do not have much effect on any of the printing or text, and after linenbacking by a talented professional, this incredibly rare poster will display wonderfully!
