(Learn More) George Petty was an American pin-up artist from the 1920s to the 1970s. His pin-up art appeared primarily in Esquire and True magazine, but was also in calendars marketed by Esquire, True and Ridgid Tool Company. Petty's Esquire gatefolds originated and popularized the magazine device of centerfold spreads. Reproductions of his work were widely rendered by military artists as nose art decorating warplanes during the Second World War, including the Memphis Belle. Robert Cummings portrayed Petty in the 1950 film "The Petty Girl". Note that George Petty started working for Esquire in 1933 until 1956 (although in the 1940s and 1950s, Alberto Vargas also did pin-ups for Esquire). Petty passed away in 1975 at the age of 81. Artist: George Petty Important Added Info: Note that in the 1940s, famed illustrator George Petty drew a "centerfold" for each issue of Esquire Magazine (they would fold out, and Hugh Hefner borrowed the idea in the 1950s for his Playboy Magazine, except he used photos instead of artwork). Esquire Magazine would create 15x20 prints of these centerfolds on a heavy glossy board stock, which they offered for sale through their magazine, with a wooden frame around it, and this is one of those prints, and best of all, it is in the original Esquire mailing carton, which has a printed Esquire address label on it (and it only cost 10 cents to mail the framed picture inside the sturdy box!). We have been consignor three of these wonderful original framed prints, and we are auctioning them in three separate auctions. We will send the original mailing carton as well, but we will of course put it into a larger box, because what was sufficient back in those days is not strong enough anymore! Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. Some of these items can ONLY be sent in flat packages, and could not possibly be rolled into a tube. On some of them (for example f it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube, like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. Condition: very good. There are some faint smudges scattered in the background areas and slight unevenness to the surface gloss (neither are very distracting at all).
