Date Sold 2/3/2013Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage World Premiere Movie Invitation (measures 7" x 9 1/2") (Learn More) Richard Tregaskis' Guadalcanal Diary, the 1943 Lewis Seiler World War II (WWII) military Pacific Islands action thriller starring Preston Foster, Lloyd Nolan, William Bendix, Richard Conte, Anthony Quinn, Richard Jaeckel (16 years old and in his first movie!), and Ralph Byrd. Note that director Lewis Seiler had an interesting background! Starting in 1923, he directed a series of around a dozen movies for William Fox, each using chimps acting in "human" roles. After that, he stayed with William Fox and worked on some of the Tom Mix movies, and then switched to Warner Bros., and was involved in some of their gangster movies, like Crime School. In 1943, he directed this movie, which is widely considered one of the very best Hollywood movies about World War II, made during the war! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that what is offered here is the actual invitation from 20th Century-Fox that was sent to important people to invite them to the world premiere of this movie at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Included with the invitation is an envelope and a card where the recipient could order tickets for the premiere from 20th Century-Fox for $5.50 (all of the money collected was donated by Fox to "War Charities"). This specific invitation was sent to Paul Kohner (see below) and he had the invitation and envelope and card stamped "RECEIVED" and filed away (apparently he did not attend)! Note that this item comes from the estate of Paul Kohner, who had a remarkable life! Kohner was born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, and he was a journalist working at his father's newspaper. He came to Hollywood after interviewing Carl Laemmle, who gave him a job as a publicity man. He became the head of Universal's European department in Berlin, and returned to the U.S. in the early 1930s, and left Universal in 1938, becoming a publicity agent. Among his clients were some of the greatest film stars ever, including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, and also great directors such as John Huston and Billy Wilder. He had close personal friendships with many of his clients, and he saved every bit of correspondence and paper work from his agency! He was married to actress Lupita Tovar from 1932 until his death in 1988. Amazingly, after his death, few institutions showed interest in his immense files, and only a small amount ended up being saved, with a lot literally thrown away! Our consignor purchased the item offered here from Mr. Kohner's estate in 1989, and he has held it until now, when he has consigned several items from Mr. Kohner's estate to eMoviePoster.com, and each item is being auctioned separately. Condition: very good. The invitation is stamped "RECEIVED" and "FILE" and there is a pen notation at top left. The envelope and card are in nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
