Auction History Result 5m0013 LOT OF 74 DEVIL DANCER 8X10 STILLS 1927 assistant director Humberstone's personal candids! Date Sold 8/23/2020 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 74 8x10 stills from The Devil Dancer, the 1927 Fred Niblo silent family relationship romantic melodrama (based on the story "by Harry Hervey"; about a white girl who is raised in a Himalayan monastery, where she is held captive, and an English explorer finds the place, and he rescues the girl and falls in love with her, but his sister is appalled and hires Muslim entertainers to kidnap her and he eventually finds her dancing with them!) starring Gilda Gray (in the title role as Takla, The Devil Dancer), Clive Brook, Anna May Wong, Serge Temoff, and Michael Vavitch. Note that around the time this movie was made, actress Gilda Gray had created a dance craze with a new dance called "The Shimmy", and it was a natural for her to appear as a dancer in a movie! Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. Note that this lot and 21 others we are currently auctioning, were owned by director H. Bruce Humberstone (nicknamed "Lucky"). He was born in 1901 and he started as a juvenile actor, and in his teens, he became a script clerk, and then worked his way up to being an assistant director to many top directors, including King Vidor. In 1932, he directed his first movie, and he worked steadily through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, directing one last movie in 1961. He directed both "A" and "B" movies, including some Tarzan, Charlie Chan, Cisco Kid, and more, and some of his movies have cult status, including "I Wake Up Screaming"! The 22 lots we are currently auctioning include a large number of stills (many of them key books and some include lots of incredible candids showing Humberstone) from movies that he either directed or was the assistant director on, and there are also some non-still items as well, including his personal phone/address book, which had the phone numbers of all the top stars of that time! This is a rare opportunity to obtain large numbers of guaranteed original stills and other items from Humberstone movies that were the property of the man himself! Condition: fine. The stills were stored in a brown folder since they were created, and as noted above, these were director Humberstone's personal stills, and they are in remarkable condition! We still have the brown folder, but it has no printing connected to the movie on it (just generic printing from the folder company), and it has darkened with age. If the high bidder on these photos wants it, they could have it, but we can't see that it has any value other than that it lends even more authenticity to the stills being from when the movie was first made. In addition, the folder measures 9 1/2" x 12", so sending it would make for a larger package. Unless the high bidder tells us that they want the folder sent, we will discard it.
