The Saint in New York, the 1938 Ben Holmes detective crime mystery thriller ("The man whose daring deeds made daily headlines in his one-man war on crime!"; "Daring hero of a dozen novels at war with Gangland's overlords"; "From the Novel by Leslie Charteris"; "Screen play by Charles Kaufman and Mortimer Offner") starring Louis Hayward (in the title role as Simone Templar aka The Saint), Kay Sutton, Sig Ruman, Jonathan Hale, and Jack Carson. Note that this was the first of the "Saint" movies made by RKO, based on Leslie Charteris' classic character, The Saint (the only one with Louis Hayward, because afterwards, George Sanders took over). However, Charteris often disagreed with any story changes made by RKO and with Sanders' interpretation of his character. Because of this (and to save on royalty fees), the 1941 film "The Saint in Palm Springs" was the last of the series produced by RKO. Instead, they made "The Gay Falcon", which obviously starred the exact same character, but with the name changed (and there were many more in that series). Mr. Charteris threatened to sue RKO over this but the matter was settled out-of-court, and in 1953, RKO handled U.S. distribution for the English film "The Saint's Return" (also known as "The Saint's Girl Friday"), which starred Louis Hayward, who had played The Saint in the first RKO movie! George Sanders starred in four movies as The Falcon. After the fourth movie, the role of The Falcon was passed from George Sanders (who apparently had tired of this role, and wanted to leave) to Tom Conway (they played brothers in a movie called "The Falcon's Brother", and in real life they were brothers!; it had George Sanders' character killed, and his brother, played by Tom Conway, shows up and solves his murder, and becomes the "new" Falcon; and Conway went on to make a total of twelve Falcon movies).

Important Added Info: Note that when Spanish heralds have printing on the back, we picture both sides, but when they are blank on the back, we only picture the front.

Please note that Spanish heralds, like U.S. heralds, were printed in very large quantities, and then sent to individual theaters in Spain, and they would sometimes have the backs of them overprinted with their theater name and specific play dates. But because a movie might play in Spain for a period of a year or two (traveling from theater to theater), there is no guarantee that the date overprinted on the back of the herald is the same as the date that the herald was first printed (and the date that the movie first played in Spain).

Therefore, we don't list the date overprinted on the back of a herald as the date of the herald unless we know that was when the movie first played in Spain. If we believe the herald was printed earlier, then we use that date. If it is important to you that the date on the herald is the date the movie first opened, then please look at our image of the back of this herald to see if there is a different date printed on it.
