An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 38 1/2" [70 x 98 cm]) (Learn More)

Louis Gurlitt (born Heinrich Louis Theodor Gurlitt) was a Danish-German painter from the 1830s to the 1890s. He is known for his landscape oil paintings, and we know he painted "Vercingetorix with Some Distinguished Gauls", because we have auctioned the poster with that image! Gurlitt passed away in 1897 at the age of 85. If anyone knows more about this artist, this painting, or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Artist: Louis Gurlitt
Important Added Info: Note that this poster is completely undated, and we could find no reference to when it was from. Since the artist died in 1875, we are dating it to then, but it certainly could be from later, but we would be very surprised if it is from any later than the turn of the 20th century. Please do not bid unless you can accept the uncertainty as to the date of this poster. Note that, as noted above, this poster reproduces the Louis Gurlitt painting called "Vercingetorix with some distinguished Gauls". Vercingetorix was the leader of the Gauls in the time of Julius Caesar, and amazingly, he united them in a revolt against Rome, and they defeated Caesar's army in one battle, but ultimately, they could not prevail, and Vercingetorix surrendered to save his men, and he was taken to Rome and paraded as a show of Roman triumph over its enemies for five years, and then he was brutally killed. If anyone knows more about this painting or poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: poor to fair. There is paper loss and several long tears in the lower left. There is a 10" tear in the bottom center of the image with some other tears and paper loss around the edges. Obviously, someone could restore this poster, but bear in mind its many defects before placing a bid on it. Please look at our super-sized image to get a good sense of the exact condition of this item.
